How to Make the “Perfect” Cup of Coffee

Step 1:

Start With Good Coffee

You may think this an obvious place to start, but it is something that people sometimes overlook. Not all coffee is created equal. We are so lucky to partner with Rootless Coffee Co. as not only is their coffee delicious, but it’s also mindful. According to their website, “Not all of [their coffee] is "certified" organic, as it's expensive for farmers to get said certification. But all of it is 100% ethically sourced.”

They know that to make the best espresso, you grind the beans finely and that to have the most flavor in your french press, you make the beans more coarse. Fresh coffee is also key to flavor. Roasted coffee beans typically lose their flavor about one week after being roasted. It’s important to buy beans and drink coffee from someone who eats, sleeps and breathes coffee.

Step 2:

Know What You Like

There’s no shame in adding milk and sugar. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. In my humble opinion, I think it’s good to take at least one sip of the coffee black to really get the bold, rich flavor, but then go wild. You prefer flavored syrups? Awesome. You love oat milk in your coffee? More power to you. You want to add yogurt to your coffee? A little weird but who am I to yack your yum.

Find what you like and you’ll enjoy your coffee a lot more than the people who won’t drink anything but black. Don’t be afraid to experiment though. Start with flavors then maybe work yourself up to getting an electric frother to make things like lattes and cold foam. Coffee can be art and science all meshed together to create something delicious.

Step 3:

Take a Moment and Smell the Roses

Now roses here is a bit metaphorical. Unless you have an actual rose garden, then please do take a moment to admire them, but I use this phrase to illustrate the busyness of the culture we live in. I find it interesting that countries like France and Italy will not give you to-go cups at their coffee shops. They want you to sit and enjoy your cup of coffee like it was meant to be enjoyed. Slowly, calmly, peacefully. They prioritize the experience of having coffee over the hustle and bustle of American culture.

How many movies have we seen with the stressed assistant rushing into the office with 4 coffees in her hand and ultimately she spills most of it? Pretty sure that describes at least most romantic comedies. In America we need to change this coffee culture. Next time you make yourself a cup or you run into a cafe, take a moment and take a sip and be still. If you have to imagine you’re in a little Italian cafe, I understand, but just for a few minutes, leave the anxiety of your day behind you and focus on the warmth filling you inside.

We hope this guide helps you enjoy your next cup of coffee whether that’s at Embers Coffee Co. or grinding your own beans at home. And remember, the “perfect” cup of coffee is whatever you want it to be.
